Health Benefits of Fermented Foods

Why fermented food can be healthy

People have been fermenting foods for centuries, but due to current gut health trends and the benefits of probiotics, fermented foods are on the rise!

What are fermented foods?

It’s no wonder that people are getting fanatical about fermenting.  Fermented foods are foods and drinks which have undergone an anaerobic process which in microorganisms break down certain food components (such as glucose) into other products (like organic acids or alcohol).  Fermented foods don’t sound the most appetising but I can assure you that they are full of health benefits!

Popular fermented foods include:

  • Miso
  • Sauerkraut
  • Tempeh
  • Kimchi
  • Kefir
  • Kombucha
  • Sourdough
  • And many more

Fermented foods often contain additional health benefits to their original form.  And this is mainly down to the fact that they contain probiotics.

So, what are probiotics?

In very simple terms, probiotics are gut friendly bacteria.  Probiotics are live microorganisms that benefit the body.  They play a variety of roles, from helping to digest food, to supporting our immune system and mental health.
