As I scan around my home it becomes clear that there is a lot of plastic around us and as soon as arrive into the office on a Monday morning one of my first objectives is to make myself a nice warm cup of tea just to sort of feel awake. After conducting a little research I discover that even most tea bags contain plastic, well approximately 96% of them (shocking I know) and 2.5 billion coffee cups are thrown away every year in the UK (don’t worry we are all guilty of grabbing a takeaway coffee).
Research also suggests the link between health problems and ingesting resins of BPA from plastic bottles or plastic kitchenware. BPA stands for bisphenol and is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics since the 1960’s. Some studies have found a link between BPA causing problems with fertility as the chemical affects the hormone balance in adults. Also, BPA seems to trigger symptoms of IBS and some scientific research implies a link between increased blood pressure too. So all in all this is pretty nasty stuff that we all need to try and avoid.
So to make it easier for you we have listed some tips below which we like to call it Willy’s Wonderful Ways (sounds catchy I know).
Willy’s Wonderful Ways
Plastic free tea bags
Becoming plastic free doesn’t mean you have to go without your cup of tea in the mornings/afternoons because that would make Mondays even more of a struggle. No, instead you are able to purchase tea bags which are plastic free making life far easier and more environmentally friendly.
Milk delivered to your door
Milk is a necessity for making hot drinks and to pop on our cereal but rather the buying plastic containers why not switch to the old school method and have milk bottles delivered to your door. This means you will reduce any wastage and reduce the use of plastic quite drastically.
Switching to glass or stainless steel water bottles
Times are now changing and the range of glass and stainless steel bottles is just getting better and better. Here at Willy’s we now have our very own stainless steel ‘Willys water bottles’ which will keep your liquids hot for 12 hours and cold for 48 hours meaning you can bring your soup along to work and it will remain nice and warm all day plus they look very stylish at your desk! (not that we are bias or anything).
Recycle, Recycle, Recycle
Whether you are in the office or at home recycling is a key component in helping with the landfill problems we are all facing today. Simply make sure you are separating paper, cardboard and even printer cartridges to do your bit.
So there we have it, a little rundown of the tips and tricks to help you kickstart your plastic free life.
